What happens at the initial appointment?

This is crucial so that we can get a sense of whether we would be able to work well together and to establish whether I am the right Counsellor for you. I will take some notes of your history and the difficulties that bring you to counselling at this time. Should we agree to work together we would contract regarding:

Time, fees, how often we will meet and the initial number of sessions.

Is everything I say to you confidential?

Mostly, yes it is, but there are certain exceptions which I will explain to you when we meet.

How long is each session?

Counselling sessions are 50 minutes long for individuals and 1 hour for couples. We will meet regularly once a week or fortnightly at the same time.

What will we talk about?

The sessions are yours and I am led by you as to what you would like to reflect on. Counselling is a commitment, so it is important for you to attend regularly so that you can fully benefit from the process.

Will you advise me on what to do?

No, counselling is not advice giving. Counselling helps you to reflect on your thoughts, feelings and response to your difficulties so that you can make the choices that are right for you.

Will anyone know I have come to see you?

No, you are under no obligation to inform anyone you have come for counselling if you do not wish to. It will not be on your medical records and you do not need to inform your GP if you do not wish to.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your needs. I would suggest initially 6-10 but the choice is yours. You can see me for a few sessions or longer. Regular reviews will ensure you only have the number of sessions you need.  You are able to stop and start as you need.

What happens if I am late for my appointment?

I always start and end sessions on time. Should you arrive late we will still need to end on time. This means that I am able to see the next client on time as well.

What happens if I need to cancel and re-arrange my appointment?

I ask please for at least 24 hour's notice of cancellation otherwise the full charge will be payable.

If I can offer you another appointment the same week then this charge won’t be applicable.

How do I pay?

Payment can be made by any of the following methods:

Cash, Bank Transfer or  Paypal.

How do we know when to end?

We will have regular reviews for us to check we are progressing in the right direction and the right speed as set by you.  Reviews are a way for you to see whether or not you wish to continue or are ready to end our work together.
